Techniques For Picking The Perfect Hockey Skates
Hockey skates are the most important gear you have when it comes to playing hockey. Having the right skates can mean the difference between a good and a bad game. You need to consider several factors in choosing a good pair of skates one of which is your budget, as well as your experience level and the size and shape of your feet in general. The information below will help you sort through the best ways to find a great pair of hockey skates to best suit your needs.
Perfectly fitting hockey skate can be hard to find. It is like buying any specialsed footwear such as mens skate shoes, ladies heels or athletic shoes. One way to improve the fit of your skates is to put them through a process called skate baking. What we mean is exactly what you might think, put them in an oven to bake and then wear them on your feet until they are cooled off. This makes the skates soft and causes them to be molded to the size and shape of your feet as they cool. While you can find instructions online on how to do this at home, this can be risky if you don’t know what you’re doing, and you could easily ruin your skates, or even burn yourself! To err on the side of caution it’s best to let the pros at the shop down the street do it with their specialized oven. Doing this is just about the same as having a pair of skates made custom.
Sometimes money is extremely tight – in these cases used skates are a possibility but you should be careful when doing this. The blades on skates must be regularly sharpened, and after a certain amount of use, the steel is simply worn out and must be replaced. Replacing the steel can be almost as costly as buying a new pair of skates.
When you think about it this way, it isn’t a good idea to pay for skates that have been used hard. Also keep in mind that used skates have already been broken in to someone else’s foot and may never fit you comfortable. You may just decide that your deal is a better idea to pass up unless it’s an exceptional bargain.
Putting on a pair of hockey skates for the first time is unlike many other things you will have experienced. Your skates will not feel natural, much less comfortable; the first time you put them on. Remember, skating is not really a “natural” activity for us, and it’s something we have to train ourselves to do so it feels natural. At first, your skates should feel somewhat tight. They will feel even tighter once you lace them up. As you break them in, they will begin to feel more comfortable. As long as they’re not painful and you can move around in them effectively, you have to give them a chance to feel really natural and comfortable.
When on the ice, your skate will become an extension of your feet – they are the tools that give you great speed, flexibility, and agility. Choosing a good pair is important but it may take a little time. These things will all help you pick up the perfect pair of skates. Of course, this is only one of the skills you’ll need to develop if you plan to play hockey for any length of time.
